Identification: It is a short-winged hawk, which measures about 31-36 cm in length. Though it resembles a shikra in general appearance, it is slightly darker and slatier on the upper surface and barred on tail. The number of barring varies from 4-5. The belly of males is rufous, while that of females is white with gray stripes.
Habitat: It is generally found in well-wooded areas and high forested cultivated lands. However, it may also be seen in villages.
Distribution: It is a winter visitor to Pakistan.
Breeding: It is reported to breed in Northern Areas, particularly near Gilgit between April to June. The number of eggs laid varies between 4-5.
Food: It depends chiefly upon other birds such as quails, partridges, doves, small mammals and large insects.
