Himalayan Griffon Vulture
Gyps himalayensis (Hume)

Identification: It is the largest bird, measuring from about 115 to 125 cm. in length. The upper plumage is brown or Khaki and it has a pale brownish buff below. In flight, its tail is barely visible due to the huge expanse of wings.

Habitat: It is a mountain bird but is also found in the plains.

Distribution: It is found in NWFP and Northern Areas. Also recorded from Murree Hills.

Breeding: It breeds from January to March. The number of eggs per clutch is 1.

Food: It is chiefly a scavanger feeding on carcasses.

Status: Frequent
