Imperial Eagle
Aquila heliaca (Savigny)
Identification: It is a large dark brown bird measuring about 79-84 cm. in length. The nape and the back of the neck are straw coloured and a white patch of varying extent is present on the shoulders. The tail is barred with gray and brown stripes. The sub-terminal band is broad and dark brown. The tips of the tail feathers are whitish. The back and under-tail coverts are of a dull buff colour. Its cere and feet are yellow.
Habitat: It is found in open plains and desert areas.
Distribution: It is mainly a winter visitor to Balochistan, Sindh and NWFP, but is also found in parts of Sindh and Balochistan.
Breeding: It breeds between February and April and lays 2 eggs per clutch.
Food: It feeds on carrion and kills rodents, reptiles and ground birds for food.
