Lesser Kestrel
Falco naumanni (Fleischer)

Identification: It is a little falcon measuring about 29-32 cm. in length. It is similar to the common Kestrel, but is lighter in build and distinctly paler on its underside. The upper parts of the male are chestnut coloured, but without any spots, and it has a pale blue head (no moustache), wing coverts and tail. The female is all brown on its upperside. The head is streaked and its back is heavily barred.

Habitat: It is found in towns, marshes, forests, fields, plains and cultivated areas.

Distribution: Might be present in Balochistan.

Breeding: It breeds chiefly between April and June and lays 4-5 eggs per clutch.

Food: It feeds upon small insects, frogs, lizards, birds and small mammals.

Status: Vagrant.
