Steppe Eagle
Aquila nipalensis nipalensis (Hodgson)
Identification: It is a dark chocolate brown bird varying between 75-78 cm. in length, and has a small ginger coloured patch on its nape. The colour of the cere, edges of the fleshy gape and feet are yellow. Steppe Eagles usually have two pale bars on their upper as well as on the undersides of their wings. These bars are not present on the Tawny Eagles.
Habitat: It can be seen in the outskirts of towns and cities, near carcasses or garbage dumps. They are also present in arid areas.
Distribution: It is a common winter visitor to Pakistan.
Breeding: It breeds between November and March / April and lays 2-3 eggs in a clutch.
Food: Feeds on carrion, small birds and reptiles.
