Butastur teesa (Franklin)

Identification: It is a small bird about the size of a Jungle Crow measuring around 43 cm. in length. The overall coloration is gray brown. It has a small white patch on its nape. The color of the cere is orange yellow, the eyes are white and so is the throat.It has two dark stripes on the cheek and a third mescal stripe running down from the chin.

Habitat: It is widespread throughout the country.

Distribution: It is mainly resident but locally migrant in summer.

Breeding: It breeds chiefly between February and May, varying with locality. The number of eggs laid per clutch is 3.

Food: It feeds on insects, locusts, grasshoppers, winged termites, crabs, frogs, small reptiles and rodents.

Status: Common
