Eurasian Kestrel
Falco tinnunculus (Linnaeus)

Identification: It is a small reddish brown falcon with black spots, measuring about 33-36 cm. in length. The crown, nape and sides of neck are ash black. There are two prominent black stripes running down from its eyes to the sides of its throat. The breast has venous buff streaks and the colour of the plumage on the rumps and tail is gray followed by a broad black sub terminal band and a white edge.

Habitat: It is found in open grasslands, hills, plains, cultivated and semi-desert areas.

Distribution: It is a resident bird in Balochistan, NWFP and Punjab. It can be seen throughout Pakistan during winter.

Breeding: Its breeding is reported to occur in the mountainous regions of the country. The breeding season extends from April to June and it lays between 4-5 eggs per clutch.

Food: Its food consists of insects, frogs, lizards, birds and small mammals.
