Black Eagle
Ictinaetus malayensis (Hodgson)

Identification: It has a black plumage and measures about 69 to 81 cm. in length. It has very long wings with rounded tips. The tail is also long and rounded with gray cross-bars on its inner webs. Its feet and cere are yellow in colour.

Habitat: It is a resident bird, found in evergreen and moist deciduous forests and foot hills upto an altitude of 2700 meters in the Himalayas.

Distribution: It is a rare vagrant in the Murree hills in Punjab.

Breeding: It breeds between January and April and rarely lays more than one egg.There is no information avaialable on its breeding in Pakistan.

Food: It feeds upon large insects, frogs, lizards, rodents and birds.

Status: Rare straggler
