Bearded Vulture
Gypaetus barbatus (Linnaeus)
Identification: It is one of the largest birds, measuring 115-122 cm in length. It has a black brown plumage above and reddish brown on the underside. The wings are long and dark and the tail is wedge-shaped. The head is creamy yellow with a black band across theeyes. A tuft of black bristles like feathers, called the beard is present under the chin.
Habitat: It is mainly a mountain bird, and has been reported at an altititude of 21000 ft. above sea level.
Distribution: A resident bird, present in the high mountains of Balochistan, NWFP and Northern Areas. It can occasionally be seen in Kirthar Range in Sindh and Murree hills in Punjab.
Breeding: It breeds during December to March and lays 1 or 2 eggs per clutch. |
