Eurasian Sparrow Hawk
Accipiter nisus nisosimilis (Hume)
Identification: It's a small hawk measuring approximately 31-36 cm. in length.It has a long narrow barred tail and rather broad, rounded wings. Adult males are generally darker and their crowns, backs and tails are slaty grey in colour. They also have three cross-bars on their tails.On the other hand, the upper part of the female Sparrow Hawk is brownish grey in colour. The throat and the breast is white while the tarsus and cere are yellow.
Habitat: It is found in forests and wooded countries.
Distribution: It is a resident bird of Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan and the Northern Areas.
Breeding: Reported to breed in Balochistan between April to June. The numbers of eggs vary between 4-6 but are normally 4.
Food: It feeds on quails, partridges, doves, small mammals, insects, etc.
