Crested Honey Buzzard
Pernis ptilorhynchus (Temminck)

Identification: Crested Honey Buzzard is a little bigger than the Pariah Kite measuring about 68 cm. in length. It has extreme colour variations. It is mostly gray brown above and pale brown below, narrowly cross-barred with white. The rounded head is dark gray with a short black crest. The crest can be seen when the head is slightly raised. The tail is gray with cross-bars, one at the sub-terminal followed by two more lower down.

Habitat: It is mainly a forest bird but is also common in towns and villages, cultivated areas and even in semi-desert areas.

Distribution: It is found in Balochistan, Punjab, Sindh. and NWFP.

Breeding: It breeds in Punjab upto the Murree hills (Koning, 1976) and the breeding season extends over April, May and early June. The number of eggs laid in a clutch is 2.

Food: It feeds chiefly on bees and wasps and other insects.
