Activities for KIDS CORNER of Invasive species

Following is an interesting activity about the invasives species of Pakistan. Go through the information given in both columns and try to match the information given in Column I with that in Column II.

1. Paper Mulberry A Railway creeper
2. A small tree or large spiny shrub containing greenish yellow flowers. Known as Kikar or Dewi in local language. Its fruit is yellow in colour, which contains sweet pulp. B It is a slender annual herb. Very commonly found in Pakistan. It is an agricultural weed. Its seed coat has hooks, which help them to move from one place to another by attaching to fur, bags and clothes.
3. Catchweed bed straw C White top
4. A small aquatic plant with long roots. Its fruit resembles berry. It is found in the water reservoirs, ponds and marshes. It provides shelter to different disease spreading vectors such as the mosquito esp. the Anopheles mosquito responsible for causing malaria. D It is an aquatic herb, widely distributed in Pakistan. It contains blue or purplish blue flowers. It grows at very fast rate and forms a dense covering on water surface which interferes with local plants for respiration.
5. Water Hyacinth E Mesquite
6. Large shrubs with hallow branches contain pink and purple flowers. It is semi aquatic in nature and abundantly found in Indus Delta. F An aquatic fern usually 30 cm long contains numerous leaves. It grows fast and propagates its vegetation on large areas. It provides shelter to human vectors such as snail and insects.
7. Kariba weed, water fern G Water cabbage
8. It is an erect herb, which grows in open areas and roadsides. It is present in the upper parts of Punjab, NWFP, and Islamabad. It causes fever, asthma and dermatitis in humans and skin rashes in animals, it also cause bitter milk disease in animals feeding on them. H It is a 16m tall dioecious (unisexual, both sexes on separate trees) tree bearing juicy fruits which are orange -red in colour. Its pollen grains have caused allergy problems in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. Largely crows eat its fruits, which helps to disseminate its seeds.
