Motivation:
Teacher can start the lesson by discussing about the gifts of nature and materials developed by human beings. Following hints can help the teacher through the discussion:
- Gifts of nature provided to us such as food, vegetation, forests air and other necessities (Teacher may wish to brain storm about the gifts of nature),
- Things made by human beings such as artificial colours,
- Use of these things by human beings and other animals such as eating, clothing, making buildings furniture and other stuff.
- What happen to these things when they are utilised by people and other animals (thrown as waste, use for other purposes, becomes part of soil)
After bringing the discussion towards production of waste. Teacher can brain storm about the types of waste generally produced such as sewage, peels of fruits and vegetables and other food stuff, pieces of clothes, paper, plastic bags and other plastic stuff, oil, liquid and solid waste from industries. After brain storming about types of waste generally, teacher can specially discuss about waste produced from different areas such as kitchen, hospitals, and industries.
Teacher can divide the students in four groups and ask them to find out the about waste produced at the following places:
- Kitchen/home
- Offices
- Industries
- Hospitals
- Markets
For the purpose of collecting information, teacher can ask students to search from different places such as interviewing mothers, sisters; people working at industries, offices, hospitals, read newspapers, books, magazines, and collecting information from relevant reading material and people. Teacher can also encourage the field visits to some industries, hospitals, offices and markets so that the students can get first hand information about waste produced from these places.(If visit to all these places is not possible than visit to some of the places such as school office, market or hospital can be managed)
After collecting information from different sources, presentations on the collected information can be delivered in the class. At this point students should be encouraged ask question, share their experiences and other information during presentations.
Conclusion:
After presentations teacher can initiate discussion on individual responsibility in reducing waste. Here teacher can discuss the ways to minimise the production of waste, which include 4 R's
- Reduce: Reduce the amount of waste produce by us
- Refuse: Refuse or saying no to things which produce waste such as use of plastic bag especially when buying things
- Reuse: Reusing things such as, plastic bags, clothes
- Recycle: Recycle things to make better use of them such as recycling glass pieces to make other stuff, Using the other side of paper
In this context teacher can emphasis on personal responsibility, how each one can play their part in reducing waste. Examples of proper use of paper, water, pencils, clothes, and stationers.
Home fun:
Students can be asked to watch the amount of waste produce in their homes and suggest ways to their families in reducing waste, Students should be encouraged to share their experiences and impact of their interventions. |
