Mammals

Carnivores

There are 31 species of carnivores in Pakistan including four foxes and six small cats. Carnivores specifically include the snow leopard, common leopard, lynx, caracal, civet, mongoose, hyena, desert Palla’s cat and fishing Palla’s cat. The exotic snow leopard has become the centre of much research recently. It is a shy and rare animal mostly inhabiting the very high mountains. Wolves are also sometimes found in the northern uplands although they are no longer a common sight.

Herbivores

Wild herbivores include the only species of wild horse, the Indian wild ass, found in only one area in the province of Sindh. This animal has declined considerably, so much so that it is now threatened with extinction. The urial (a kind of wild sheep) is represented by different sub-species, which are spread over a large area form Balochistan to the northern areas. The sub-species are marco polo sheep, the markhor, a wild goat (both are found in the northern areas) and the bharal or blue sheep which is the largest of all goats. (The mammals of Pakistan pg-4)

The Sindh ibex is found in the dry, high mountains of Sindh and Balochistan. The Himalayan ibex, a sub-species, is found in Swat and Gilgit. The black buck was once found in Cholistan. It had completely vanished but is now being reintroduced.

There are only two species of primates, the common langur and two subspecies of rhesus macaque.
